The membership has been informed that all club meetings have been suspended until further notice.  Also, the 2019 Natchitoches Fishing Expo set for January has been cancelled.  An alternative event is under consideration.  More details will be forthcoming.

Welcome back, Casters!  As is our tradition of taking summer off, we'll be sharing some of our members great summer fishing stories.  We'll also begin planning for the 2019 Natchitoches Fishing Expo in January.

Prior to the meeting, we'll have casting on the lawn.  Hopefully we have an early taste of cooler Fall weather to enjoy!

We plan to have food and refreshments. Pot luck offerings are welcome.  Guests are welcome!

As is our tradition, the Cane Country Fly Casters will not hold regular monthly meetings during certain summer months.  This year, we'll have NO meetings in June, July and August.  Our next regular meeting will be in September where we will begin our planning for the 2019 Natchitoches Fishing Expo.

Some of our neighboring clubs have summer events.  We encourage our members to attend and join the fun and learning.

Picnic & meeting this Saturday, NEW LOCATION!

A reminder that this Saturday we'll have our annual Spring Fishing Day & Picnic on the Cane River.  We'll start grilling burgers and dogs around 11am.

NEW LOCATION:  Instead of meeting at Shell Beach, we'll be holding the picnic on the riverfront downtown near the Roque House.  Burley will have the floating dock available to launch our kayaks.  Or you can fish from the bank.

Come join us to fish the Cane River. Launch your boat, kayak or canoe downtown, Shell Beach or at the dam. Or fish from the bank downtown or at Shell Beach.

At noon, we'll have grilled hamburgers and hot dogs at the Shell Beach park. Bring your own chairs and drinks. And bring your fishing stories from the morning.

April 9th meeting - Tom Bullock

For our April meeting, we welcome Tom Bullock as our guest speaker.  A member of the North Louisiana Fly Fishers, Tom has fly fished his entire life. He also serves on the board of directors of the FFI Gulf Coast Council and the Friends of the Red River National Wildlife Refuge.

Tom will talk on "Fly Fishing the White and Norfork Rivers Below the Dams". These north Arkansas tailwaters offer a world-class fishery for rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. But they can be finicky at times. Tom will tell us his tricks to dependable, and often quality results.

Notes from March meeting

Larry Offner gave us a presentation on places in south Louisiana to bank fish from.  In addition to New Orleans area canals and ponds for Rios, two closer spots of interest to our members were Dubisson Lake off I-49 near Ville Platte and Oil Park Pond in Jennings.  As always, Larry mixed in a few of his many entertaining, and often funny, fishing stories.

For April, our guest speaker will be Tom Bullock, who will present on fly fishing the White and Norfork Rivers in Arkansas.

Our annual club outing and picnic on the Cane River will be on Saturday, May 12th. Details will be posted here shortly.

Our next biennial fly fishing and light tackle festival will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Westside Baptist Family Life Center in Natchitoches.  The website page is already up.  The Facebook page will soon go up as well.

February 12 meeting - Capt. Steve Stubbe

For our February meeting, we have a real treat!  Our guest speaker will be Capt. Steve "Scooby" Stubbe of Mudfish Adventures.  Steve is a fishing guide on Toledo Bend who specializes in fly fishing the backwaters for big bass.  He's even developed his own line of custom fly rods for targeting big largemouths in heavy cover.  Several folks who've cast them say the Mudfish rods are one of the lightest, most accurate big game rods they've ever cast!!

Steve's presentation will be "Fly Fishing the Beautiful Backcountry of Toledo Bend".

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Here's wishing our members and friends, and all of their families, a most blessed Christmas and a prosperous and healthy 2018.  Hope everyone finds something under the Christmas tree that they can put to good use, especially in pursuit of our favorite pasttime. And let's not forget that at this time of year, to pray for those who are less fortunate, for those in suffering, and for our service men and women away from their homes and families.

The club has lots of fun things in store for 2018. In addition, there are many activities planned by our neighboring friends across the state, and in Arkansas and east Texas.  Check our Calendar page for dates and details.

We'll start with casting in the gym at 6:00pm, with meeting at 6:30pm.

This month, we welcome Cane River Paddle and Pedal.  Located near the riverfront here in Natchitoches, Cane River Paddle and Pedal is a fully authorized Hobie dealer for northwest Louisiana, featuring a host of models with their innovative Mirage Drive.  They also rent boats for use on the Cane RIver.  The folks at CRPP will talk to us about their boats and also have a Hobie to show off.

29th annual Toledo Bend Rendezvous this weekend!

What is Rendezvous?  It's the largest annual gathering of fly tiers in our state, with no planned activities but plenty of fly tying, food, and fishing. Held annually at North Toledo Bend State Park near Zwolle, the event is co-sponsored by the Gulf Coast and Texas Councils of Fly Fishers International, and is open to the public. It kicks off Friday afternoon and ends after breakfast on Sunday morning. Many of the top tiers from the Ark-La-Tex region and beyond will be on hand tying at the numerous tables inside the large dining room.

Five bunkhouses are reserved for overnight stay on Friday, Saturday or both nights. The 2-night fee is $50 family, $40 single, and 1-night fee is $25 family, $20 single. Those coming just for the day Saturday are asked to make a donation to help offset the rental fees. Once again, Glen Cormier attended the ICAST / International Fly Tackle Dealer trade show back in July and has lots of new products to report on.  He'll give us a slide presentation on "What's New for 2018" covering fly fishing, kayak fishing and accessories.  Many of these new products are now available or will be available in stores shortly.  He'll also give us a "State of the Sport" summary on the latest trends in fly fishing.

Gulf Coast Fly Fishing Fair - Sept. 15-16

Sponsored by the Gulf Coast Council - Fly Fishers International (FFI). The Gulf Coast Fly Fair features free presentations, casting lessons, beginner classes, tying demonstrations, auctions and raffles, and more. And best of all, it's FREE!

For those looking to improve their fly casting skills, the GCC Fair offers the largest contingent of FFI Certified and Master Certified instructors of any event on the Gulf Coast.  Also, Boy and Girl Scouts have the opportunity to work on their Fly Fishing Merit Badge.

The Friday night casual buffet and Awards Dinner will be held also at the OSCC. It will feature an auction rich with prizes including art, fly tackle, guided trips, award winning fly plates, and much more. Along with the day raffles, proceeds will benefit the Gulf Coast Marine Research Lab, and conservation projects within the council boundaries of Louisiana, Mississippi, south Alabama and Florida panhandle.

Cane Country Fly Casters is a member of the FFI Gulf Coast Council.  We highly encourage our members to take in the largest fly fishing show on the Gulf Coast.

Contraband Fly Fishing Expo - Sat., August 19th

On Saturday, August 19th our friends in the Lake Charles club will hold their annual fly fishing expo, or conclave.  The event is free and open to the public.  We hope to see you all there!
